A drilling rig must be equipped with the proper tooling: reamers, drill rods and a flushing head. Drill rods come in various lengths and differ by connector type — trapezoidal or tapered. Reamers are of two main types: wing augers and PIKO bits.
Flushing pipes
For deep-well drilling, you need a certain number of drill rods depending on their size and the maximum depth of a hydraulic drilling rig. Drill rods are hollow; on each side a connector with trapezoidal or tapered thread is welded.
Wing auger
The most optimal tool for a manual rig is a wing auger with three blades, each having a cutting edge. The edges wear faster, so VK8 hardmetal plates are welded on to extend service life.
PIKO reamer
To speed up drilling in hard rock with a manual rig, PIKO reamers are used instead of wing augers on difficult jobs.
Flushing heads
A flushing head delivers drilling fluid through the drill string to the cutting tool.
HDD drill rods
Drill rods for horizontal directional drilling (HDD) are a core component of the steerable boring system.
They are used to:
- Transfer torque and thrust from the rig to the drilling tool,
- Deliver drilling fluid through the internal conduit to the drill head for cooling, lubrication and cuttings removal,
- Connect successive sections during reaming and pipeline pullback,
- Provide stability and directional control thanks to high strength and stiffness.
With the right diameter, wall thickness and length, the rods enable safe and efficient HDD in various ground conditions — from soft soils to harder formations.
